How to use the each way calculator

  1. Enter your stake per part. A "£10 each way" bet means £10 here.
  2. Choose the place terms the bookmaker offered, usually 1/4 or 1/5 of the odds.
  3. Enter the odds and pick the result: won, placed or lost.

How each way returns are worked out

The win part pays at full odds only if your selection wins. The place part pays at a fraction of the odds if your selection finishes in the places, and it also pays when it wins. The formula is:

Each way return = (win stake × decimal odds) + (place stake × place odds), where place odds = 1 + (decimal odds − 1) × place terms.

Worked example

You back a horse at 5/1 for £10 each way, with 1/5 odds for three places. Your total stake is £20.

  • It wins: win part £10 × 6.00 = £60. Place part: 5/1 × 1/5 = 1/1, so £10 × 2.00 = £20. Total return £80, profit £60.
  • It finishes third: the win part loses. The place part returns £20. Total return £20, so you break even.
  • It finishes fourth: both parts lose, and you lose £20.

FAQs

What are standard each way terms in the UK?

Under the usual UK terms, races with 5 to 7 runners pay 2 places at 1/4 odds, and races with 8 or more pay 3 places at 1/5. Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners pay 3 places at 1/4, and handicaps with 16 or more pay 4 places at 1/4. Bookmakers often pay extra places on big races.

Is each way worth it at short odds?

Usually not. At 2/1 with 1/5 terms the place part pays 2/5 (1.40), so a £10 each way bet that only places returns £14 from a £20 stake. Each way works best on bigger prices in competitive races.

Why did my each way return look wrong?

Check the place terms and whether a Rule 4 deduction was applied because a horse was withdrawn. This calculator does not apply Rule 4 or dead-heat rules.
