What Does BTTS Mean in Betting?

By the TheyShoot editorial team. Updated

BTTS means "both teams to score". A BTTS "yes" bet wins if each team scores at least one goal, whatever the final result. A 1-1 draw or a 3-2 win both win the bet; a 2-0 win or a 0-0 draw lose it. A BTTS "no" bet is the opposite.

What does BTTS mean?

Both teams to score is a football market with two outcomes. You back "yes" if you think both sides will score, or "no" if you think at least one side will fail to score. The winner of the match and the number of goals don't matter, only whether each team finds the net.

How BTTS bets are settled

  • 90 minutes only. BTTS is settled on normal time plus stoppage time. Goals in extra time and penalty shootouts don't count.
  • Own goals count for the team they are credited to. If the away side scores only through an opposition own goal, both teams have still "scored".
  • Abandoned matches are usually void unless both teams had already scored, in which case "yes" bets often stand. Check your bookmaker's rules.

BTTS vs over 2.5 goals

The two markets often move together, but they are different bets. A 3-0 win is over 2.5 goals but loses BTTS yes. A 1-1 draw wins BTTS yes but is under 2.5 goals. A 2-1 result wins both.

BTTS and win

"BTTS and win" combines both teams scoring with a named team winning, so a 2-1 home win pays on "home win and BTTS", while 2-0 or 1-1 do not. The odds are higher because two things must happen.

When to consider BTTS yes

Look for two sides that both create chances and concede them: attacking teams with weaker defences, matches where neither side can afford to sit back, and teams missing key defenders. Our stats pages show how often each team's games end with both sides scoring.

FAQs

Does an own goal count for BTTS?

Yes. An own goal counts for the team it is credited to, so if each side has at least one goal on the scoreboard, including own goals, BTTS yes wins.

Does BTTS include extra time?

No. BTTS is settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shootouts are not included.

What is BTTS no?

BTTS no wins if at least one team fails to score, for example 1-0, 2-0 or 0-0.

Is a 0-0 draw BTTS?

No. In a 0-0 draw neither team scores, so BTTS yes loses and BTTS no wins.
