How do you use the NHL trade analyzer?

  1. Type a player's name under "You give" and choose from the list. Add everyone you'd send.
  2. Do the same under "You get" for the players coming back.
  3. Set the points per goal, assist, shot and so on to match your league, then read the verdict.

How does the trade analyzer value players?

Each player's fantasy points per game this season are multiplied by the games the team has left, and by the share of the team's games the player has played. That gives projected fantasy points for the rest of the season, and the side with more projected points wins the trade. Goalies are projected the same way from the games they play, so a backup who plays one game in three counts for a third of the schedule.

It's a projection from this season's numbers only. Early in the season, a hot two weeks can flatter a player, so weigh career numbers and role too. Injured players count as if they'll keep playing at the same rate.

Worked example

Connor McDavid (EDM) has 8 goals and 28 assists in 13 games. With the default scoring (2 points a goal, 1 an assist, 0.1 a shot, 0.5 per plus-minus), that's 55.8 fantasy points, or 4.29 a game. With 71 games left for the Edmonton Oilers, that projects to about 305 more.

How this data works

Player stats come from the NHL's public club stats for the regular season, added together for players who have played for more than one team. Games left come from each team's NHL schedule. Data updated October 30 at 2:35 p.m. ET.

FAQs

How do I know if a fantasy hockey trade is fair?

Compare the fantasy points both sides are likely to score for the rest of the season, using your league's scoring. Games left matter: a team with more games left gives its players more chances to score.

Does the trade analyzer include goalies?

Yes. Goalies score from wins, saves, goals against and shutouts, and are projected from the share of their team's games they play.

Does it work for points leagues and category leagues?

It's built for points leagues. For category leagues, set the weights to reflect how much you need each category.
